Most sports = fast paced, but still, professional photographers can get close-up action shots.

You anticipate where the object is going to be, set up your shot, and take pics rapid-fire, with fast lenses. Some cameras have 'burst' settings where you press down the button to take one shot, but it clicks multiple times consecutively, to take several pics in milliseconds.

Yep, I can definitely guesstimate that. As long as I'm given a field of range, I can frame the shot, and get some decent close ups. Or, at least not a full wide-angle shot.
